Microclover vs. White Clover: What Actually Differs

Microclover isn't a different plant from white clover — it's a dwarf selection of the same species, Trifolium repens. Every species-level trait carries over unchanged: the same nitrogen fixing, the same tolerance profile, the same spreading habit. What breeders actually changed is leaf size, height, and how it behaves packed into a lawn. And the seeding rate printed on the bag? That's vendor marketing, not agronomy — no extension or USDA source publishes one.
What microclover actually is
Microclover — sold under names like Miniclover® — is a dwarf-leaved selection bred from ordinary white clover (Trifolium repens), not a separate species. One seed vendor's own category page makes the point plainly, describing "White Dutch Clover" and "Miniclover®" side by side as two forms of the same plant, with Miniclover marketed as "a better lawn alternative in most areas." Breeders selected it for a shorter, denser growth habit and a smaller leaf: mature plants top out around 4–6 inches, and the leaf blade runs roughly half the size of standard White Dutch clover's. What is identical
Because microclover is a selection within the same species, every trait that comes from being Trifolium repens transfers unchanged:
- Nitrogen fixing. Both fix their own nitrogen from the air and share it with neighboring grass — no separate nitrogen fertilizer needed. White clover stores up to 45 percent of its nitrogen contribution in its roots, more than any other legume cover crop.
- Shade tolerance: good.
- Drought tolerance: good, per the more recent USDA/Iowa State fact sheet (2024). An older Penn State sheet rates it "Low" instead — the two extension sources disagree, and we're flagging that rather than picking a winner silently.
- Wet soil tolerance: good.
- Low-fertility tolerance: good.
- Spreading habit. Both spread by stolons — creeping surface stems — rather than a main upright stem, which is how a clover lawn knits itself together and fills gaps over time.
- Seeds per pound: about 500,000, per USDA/Iowa State's 2024 figure. Penn State's extension sheet gives a different figure, about 800,000 — we're using the more recent number, with Penn State's retained as a minority observation.
What actually differs
Every difference between the two comes down to what breeders selected for, and every figure below is a seed vendor's own product description — not an extension trial, since no extension or USDA source has studied microclover specifically:
- Leaf size. Microclover's leaf blade runs about half the size of standard White Dutch clover's.
- Height. Microclover matures at roughly 4–6 inches; ordinary white clover grows taller and looser.
- Response to mowing. The vendor sheet claims leaf size shrinks further with regular cutting, and the plant can be trained down to that 4–6 inch range through mowing.
- Behavior in a lawn or mix. One vendor describes microclover as "not aggressive like White Dutch Clover," which is the basis for its lawn-blend marketing. A separate seed company's seeding guide recommends keeping microclover to about 5 percent of a grass-seed mix by weight for a lawn-alternative planting — denser than that and it can crowd the grass rather than blend with it.
None of this changes the species-level facts above — it's cultivar selection layered on top of an identical underlying plant.
Which one belongs in a lawn
For a low, tidy, mowable clover cover, microclover's smaller leaf and shorter habit make it the practical fit — that's specifically what it was bred for, even though the claim traces to seed vendors rather than an extension trial. For a grass-and-clover mix, ordinary white clover works fine at a low percentage of the total mix, because it spreads by stolons and fills in its own space over time rather than needing a high seeding percentage to establish.
One caution worth carrying over from the pasture literature: Penn State's extension sheet notes that pure stands of common white clover aren't usually planted, because of the plant's low growth habit and low yield — that's a forage-and-pasture context, not a lawn recommendation, but it's the closest thing extension sources say about growing common white clover as a standalone stand. It's a different question from the vendor claim that microclover specifically works as a full lawn replacement, and we're not blending the two.

What the bag will not tell you
Here's the gap: no USDA or university extension source publishes a clover lawn seeding rate in pounds per 1,000 square feet — not for white clover, and not for microclover specifically. Every extension figure we could find for clover is a pasture, cover-crop, or beautification rate in pounds per acre — a different unit built for a different use case, not something you can just divide down to get a lawn number. That's true across every USDA white clover fact sheet we checked, including two older variants that repeat the same acre-based figures. Our own seeding-rate database reflects that gap honestly: it carries no lawn rate for white clover at all, rather than inventing one.
Every lb/1,000 ft² figure you'll actually see on a bag or a product page comes from a seed vendor, not an extension service. Outside Pride's product sheet lists 1–2 lb/1,000 ft² for a new pure microclover stand, and 1/2–1 lb/1,000 ft² for overseeding. West Coast Seeds publishes a lower figure for the same job — about 0.88 lb/1,000 ft² of raw seed for a pure stand, or roughly 1.1 lb/1,000 ft² if the seed is pelleted (pelleted seed is coated, so it weighs more per viable seed at the same coverage). For a grass-clover mix rather than a pure stand, that same company recommends closer to 0.11 lb/1,000 ft² of clover — about 5 percent of the mix by weight — which is a different question with a different answer than seeding clover alone, not a smaller version of the same number.
Those vendor numbers don't even agree with each other, and the vendor sheets aren't always internally consistent either — Outside Pride's own spec sheet rates microclover's shade tolerance as "Poor," directly contradicting both its own marketing copy elsewhere on the same page, which says it tolerates "partially shady conditions," and the extension-verified "Good" rating for the base species. That's not a reason to distrust clover — it's a reason to treat any single bag's numbers as a starting point, not a verified rate.
