The rates behind the calculator
Every figure here is a manufacturer's or seed seller's published rate, not extension-verified. The calculator does no blending or averaging: it multiplies each seller's own rate by your area and shows you both.

Why the two numbers are so far apart
We don't know, and neither seller explains its figure. What we can say is where the numbers come from: both are published by companies that sell clover seed, and we have found no university trial behind either one. How much clover seed do I need per 1,000 square feet?
It depends on the job and on whose figure you use. For adding clover to an existing lawn, West Coast Seeds publishes 50 grams per 1,000 square feet and Outside Pride publishes 1/2 to 1 pound for its Miniclover. For a clover-only lawn, West Coast Seeds publishes 400 grams of raw seed per 1,000 square feet and Outside Pride publishes 1 to 2 pounds. These are sellers' figures, not extension-verified rates.
How much microclover do I mix with grass seed?
West Coast Seeds says to use 5% microclover by the weight of the grass seed being sown, which is 50 grams of clover for each 1 kilogram of grass seed. That is one seed seller's figure, not an extension recommendation.
Do I need more clover seed if I spread it by hand?
West Coast Seeds says so. Its rates are for machine spreading, and it says to add 25% to 50% more seed when spreading by hand. Outside Pride's sheet gives no hand-spreading adjustment, so the calculator leaves its figure unchanged.
