St. Augustine Grass Seed: Why You Can't Buy It — and What to Plant Instead

You can't buy St. Augustine grass seed, because it essentially doesn't exist as a commercial product. St. Augustinegrass is established vegetatively — from sod, plugs, or sprigs — not from seed. Two independent land-grant universities say so plainly: the University of Florida (UF/IFAS) and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, which states outright that "seed is not available." If a store is selling you a bag labeled "St. Augustine grass seed," that's worth a second look — more on that below.
Why isn't there St. Augustine grass seed?
Here's what the "no seed" shorthand gets wrong: St. Augustinegrass does produce seed. The common diploid forms of the species (2n=2x=18) are usually capable of setting fertile seed. The reason you can't buy it as seed — or grow the lawn you actually want from seed — is about the cultivars, not about whether the plant can reproduce.
The named St. Augustine varieties sold at a sod yard — Floratam, Palmetto, CitraBlue and the rest — are each a vegetatively propagated clone of a single genotype. That's not a quirk of the industry; it's closer to a genetic necessity. A fertile diploid grown from seed throws contaminating off-types rather than a uniform copy of its parent, so seed can't hold a named variety true. The genetics stack the deck further: resistance to the southern chinch bug — St. Augustine's most damaging pest — is found among the polyploid types, and Floratam is a low-fertility aneuploid (2n=32). The traits people actually want are locked into clones that don't come true from seed.
So the grass is propagated from living pieces instead. It spreads by stolons — above-ground runners with growing points at their nodes that root and send up new shoots as the plant creeps along the ground. (It has stolons but not rhizomes — the below-ground runners that bermuda and zoysia use — so above-ground pieces are the whole propagation story.) It's a broader warm-season pattern, too: not all of these grasses establish well from seed, and the seed-derived types often don't match the quality of vegetatively propagated ones.
The practical upshot is unchanged: there's no St. Augustine seed to buy, so the lawn starts as living grass — and the math for how much you need is more straightforward than the seed-bag guessing you were probably bracing for. But the reason is worth getting right: it's not that the grass can't make seed, it's that the varieties worth planting can't be bottled as one.
How to plant St. Augustine the right way
Florida's extension service lists the establishment methods for St. Augustinegrass as sod and plugs. Those are the two to plan around:
- Sod is the whole-lawn option — it lays down complete, instant ground cover, which is why it's the pick when you want a finished lawn now or need to stop erosion. It's the most expensive method, and pallets don't keep: sod life on a pallet in summer is under 48 hours, so prepare the soil first and lay it fast.
- Plugs are small squares of sod (2–4 inches) set at intervals; the grass then spreads by runners to fill the gaps between them. Plugs are the right tool for smaller areas and for repairing bare spots — cheaper than full sod, but they take time to grow together.
You'll also see sprigging mentioned for St. Augustine — planting individual runners rather than squares. It's the cheapest vegetative method but the slowest to cover, and Florida's establishment table for lawns leads with sod and plugs rather than sprigs. For most home lawns, sod or plugs is the practical call.
How much sod or how many plugs? (worked example)
This is where the commercial pages go quiet, so here's the arithmetic. UF/IFAS publishes spacing and material figures for cutting your own plugs and sprigs from sod:
- 2-inch plugs, 12 inches apart: you need 30–50 sq ft of sod per 1,000 sq ft of lawn (cut into plugs).
- Sprigs, 12 inches apart: you need 10–15 sq ft of sod per 1,000 sq ft.
Where do those figures come from? The same table gives the conversion basis: one square yard of sod yields about 324 two-inch plugs (and one square foot of sod makes roughly 80 linear feet of sprigs). Let's make it concrete:
Plugging a 500 sq ft bare area, 12 inches apart. Plugs a foot apart works out to one plug per square foot, so you need about 500 plugs. Using the table's rate, that's 500 × (30–50 ÷ 1,000) = 15–25 sq ft of sod to cut them from. As a sanity check against the conversion basis: 500 plugs ÷ 324 plugs per square yard ≈ 1.5 sq yd, or about 14 sq ft — just under the low end, because the table's range builds in some cutting waste. Either way, a very small amount of sod covers a lot of ground when it's spread as plugs; it just takes a season to grow in.
Sodding a whole 2,000 sq ft lawn. Sod is laid edge to edge, so the sod area equals the lawn area: 2,000 sq ft, which is about 222 square yards (2,000 ÷ 9). No fill-in time, but the biggest bill.

When to plant — and where you live matters
The best planting window depends on your state, and the guidance genuinely differs between Florida and Texas. This isn't the sources contradicting each other — it's regional advice for different climates, so match it to where you are:
- Florida lawns: in north and central Florida, plant in spring or late summer/early fall, and avoid the cold of winter and the hot, dry stretch of summer. In south Florida, late fall, winter, or spring is best.
- Texas lawns: Texas A&M points to late spring and early summer as ideal — it dodges temperature extremes and usually brings more natural rainfall than the drier late summer. Sod can go down year-round in much of Texas, but St. Augustine is prone to winter-kill in parts of the state, so give the roots time to develop before the first frost.
Whichever state you're in, the principle is the same: plant during active growth and steer clear of temperature extremes.
New sod and plugs live or die on watering. UF/IFAS recommends multiple short irrigations through the day for the first 7–10 days, then once daily (¼–½ inch) for another 7–10 days, then 2–3 times a week; the grass is generally fully established about three to four weeks after sodding.
Which St. Augustine cultivar should you ask for?
Once you've accepted you're buying sod or plugs, the real question is which St. Augustine. There's no single best cultivar — the right one depends on your site, and honestly on what your local sod yard carries. Rather than crown a winner, match these axes to your yard (all cultivar figures below are from UF/IFAS ENH5, revised July 2024 — worth noting because cultivar availability changes faster than the agronomy does):
- Shade tolerance. This is St. Augustine's signature strength — it's generally the most shade-tolerant warm-season grass — but even so it needs a daily minimum of 4 to 6 hours of light to survive, and tolerance varies by cultivar.
- Cold tolerance. Some cultivars handle cold far better than others — this matters most near the northern edge of St. Augustine's range.
- Leaf texture and mowing height. Standard cultivars are coarser and are mowed tall, at 3.5–4 inches; dwarf cultivars are finer and mowed lower, at about 2–2.5 inches. Your mower and your tolerance for mowing frequency both factor in.
- Chinch-bug resistance and density. The southern chinch bug is St. Augustine's major insect pest, and resistance varies by cultivar — though for several cultivars UF/IFAS lists chinch-bug resistance as simply "unknown."
A word on reading cultivar claims: extension guidance is careful about what's been proven versus what merely seems to hold, and it's worth carrying that same caution. UF/IFAS notes, for instance, that 'Classic's shade tolerance "has not yet been verified by university research," that 'Palmetto' is "sometimes referred to as drought tolerant, but research has not shown" it to be any more drought tolerant than other cultivars, and that the newer 'CitraBlue' "does not seem to be affected by disease as severely" while "research is currently undergoing" to confirm its best management. When a trait is hedged, treat it as hedged.
One important limit: the cold-tolerance ratings above come from a Florida publication and are calibrated to Florida. A cultivar UF/IFAS calls cold-hardy for north Florida — 'Raleigh', for example — isn't a reliable pick for the colder northern edge of St. Augustine country. If you're in Texas, lean on Texas A&M's own cultivar notes instead, which cover options like Raleigh, Palmetto, CitraBlue, Floratam and DelMar for Texas conditions. Because a given sod yard may stock only one or two cultivars anyway, the practical move is knowing which traits matter for your yard before you start calling around.
What to plant instead — if you really want to seed
If planting from a bag is the whole point for you, there are warm-season grasses you genuinely can grow from seed. Just go in clear-eyed: these are different grasses, not St. Augustine substitutes. They look and behave differently, and most notably they don't bring St. Augustine's shade tolerance. Seeding rates, straight from our calculator's database (per 1,000 sq ft, for a full stand):
- Zoysiagrass — 1–2 lb. Fine-textured and dense, but slow to establish from seed, and only certain cultivars (like Zenith and Compadre) are even sold as seed; most zoysia is plugged or sodded.
- Bermudagrass — 1–2 lb. Fast and tough for full sun and traffic, but poor in shade. Note that the improved turf-type bermudas are sprigged or sodded, not seeded — common bermuda is what you'd grow from seed.
- Bahiagrass — 5 lb. A low-input, drought-hardy grass for large sunny areas; coarser and more open than a manicured lawn grass.

Which St. Augustine cultivar is best for a shady yard?
There's no single answer, but shade tolerance is exactly the axis to prioritize when you call around. St. Augustine is the most shade-tolerant warm-season grass, yet it still needs at least 4–6 hours of light a day, and tolerance varies by cultivar. Ask your sod supplier which cultivars they carry and how each rates for shade rather than chasing one "best" name — and remember cultivar cold-tolerance ratings are region-specific.
Is zoysia a good substitute if I really want to seed?
It's the closest seedable option in look and feel, but it's a genuinely different grass, not a St. Augustine stand-in — and only certain zoysia cultivars (like Zenith) come as seed, while most zoysia is plugged or sodded. Zoysia also doesn't match St. Augustine's shade tolerance. If shade is your main reason for wanting St. Augustine, seeding zoysia won't solve it; sod or plugs will.
