Grass seed bag coverage claims: 43 retail listings, checked

Grass seed bags publish two coverage figures, and a listing that shows one shows the overseeding figure in all four cases we could check. Across the 16 bags that publish both, starting a lawn from bare soil takes 2.0–3.3 times the seed the overseeding figure implies, by the manufacturers' own numbers. Two coverage numbers

Coverage claims for grass seed come in two forms: a new-lawn figure for bare soil, and a larger overseeding figure for thickening existing turf. Of the 43 products in this set, 16 publish both figures, 21 show one unlabeled number, and 6 show no coverage figure at all. In all 16 bags that publish both, the overseeding figure is 2.0 to 3.3 times the new-lawn figure.

This compares each manufacturer against its own label, so it holds regardless of coating or mix — it is not a comparison against another product or an extension rate.

The number a listing shows by itself

Four products in this set turned up both ways: a single unlabeled figure at one retailer, and both the new-lawn and overseeding figures at another. In all four, the unlabeled number equals the overseeding figure exactly. For those four, the new-lawn figure is one-half to one-third of the number the single-figure listing shows: 8,000 vs. 3,330 sq ft; 2,000 vs. 1,000 sq ft; 2,800 vs. 930 sq ft; 8,000 vs. 2,660 sq ft.

The other 21 single-number listings in this set could not be checked this way — no second retailer publishing both figures for the same product turned up — so their unlabeled figures are reported only as what the listing shows, not compared against an extension rate.

Coated vs. uncoated grass seed

Coating is inert weight, not seed, and many coatings require a higher seeding rate. The normal 15% cap on inert material in a bag is waived for coated and pelleted products.

Scotts lists new-lawn coverage of 930 sq ft for a 7 lb bag of Turf Builder Sun & Shade Mix, which is coated, and 1,865 sq ft for a 7 lb bag of Heritage Sun & Shade Mix, which is uncoated — the uncoated bag lists twice the new-lawn coverage. The dataset records no seed composition and no coating fraction for either bag, so this gap can't be assigned to the coating alone.

Listing rates vs. extension rates

Four Pennington tall fescue listings imply new-lawn rates of 12.00 to 12.05 lb per 1,000 sq ft; extension consensus for tall fescue is 6 to 8 lb of seed per 1,000 sq ft. The 40 lb and 50 lb Kentucky 31 bags are coated; the 20 lb Kentucky 31 and the Rebels have no stated coating status. Pennington Smart Seed Kentucky Bluegrass implies 3.00 lb per 1,000 sq ft against a 2 to 3 lb extension range.

The listing figure above is pounds of product — for a coated bag, seed plus coating. The extension figure is pounds of seed. A coated product's pounds are not pounds of seed, so the two columns are not directly comparable: this page does not convert one into the other, and it does not suggest doubling the extension rate to compensate.

What seed costs at the extension rate

Cost per 1,000 sq ft at the extension rate is listed price divided by net weight, multiplied by the picker database's rate range for that species — our own arithmetic, not a manufacturer figure.

Home Depot prices came from a default store in Austin, Texas; Lowe's gates price behind store selection, so Lowe's products here are priced from matching Walmart listings. Regional variation is real and isn't captured in these figures.

For a coated bag, the true cost per 1,000 sq ft is higher than these figures show, because more product is needed to deliver the same amount of seed — the coating is inert weight, not seed.

Bag size and price per pound

Pennington Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue's per-pound price on September 7 was $2.99 for the 3 lb bag, $1.50 for the 20 lb bag, and $0.97 for the 40 lb bag. The 3 lb to 20 lb jump is about 2 times; 3 lb to 40 lb is roughly 3 times.

How this study was done

This dataset covers 43 retail grass seed listings collected September 7, 2026 from Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart and Tractor Supply public product pages. One row per product; where the same product was found at more than one retailer, the rows are merged.

Home Depot prices came from a default store in Austin, Texas. Lowe's gates price behind store selection, so Lowe's products are priced from matching Walmart listings; regional pricing variation is real and not captured here.

Pennington Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue, 20 lb, lists 1,660 sq ft of new-lawn coverage at one retailer and 1,600 at another. Both are recorded; neither is resolved as correct.

Forage, pasture and food-plot products were collected but excluded from this set.

Two rules govern the comparisons on this page: an unlabeled coverage figure is never compared against an extension rate, and a product named as a mix is never compared against a single-species extension rate — a blend is seeded at a rate for the blend as a whole, not the sum of its parts. Coating status is recorded only where a listing or product name stated it; a blank in that column means not stated, not uncoated.

What this study can't tell you

No seed analysis tag data is in this dataset. Purity, germination, weed seed, other crop content, inert matter and test date are lot-specific figures printed on the physical bag, not published online, so cost per pound of pure live seed cannot be computed from these listings.
